Basics

Where is the Library located and how do I get there? [BACK TO TOP]

The library is located on the first floor of Building 30 at San Francisco General Hospital- Address and hours

Free Shuttles to SFGH are available. For current schedules, visit the UCSF Transportation website.

Driving Directions
From 101, take the CESAR CHAVEZ STREET/POTRERO AVENUE exit. Follow the signs to Potrero Avenue. Turn right on 24th Street.

Metered and non-metered street parking is often available in the area surrounding San Francisco General Hospital. You may also use the SFGH garage, entry and exit on 24th Street between Utah Street and San Bruno Avenue- Google Map. Parking is $1.25 per hour or $12.00 all day.- parking rates

Exit the garage onto 23rd Street, cross 23rd Street, and enter Building 9, to the left of the main hospital driveway. Go through Building 9 all the way to the end of the hall and you will be in Building 30. The library is to your left just before the end of the hall.

By BART
Exit at 16th Street and Mission BART station. Board the free YELLOW or YELLOW EXPRESS SFGH/BART shuttle van in front of the Burger King- shuttle schedule. At SFGH, the shuttle stops in front of the hospital's clinic entrance. Cross the driveway in front of the main hospital entrance and go down the stairs or ramp. Building 30 is the first brick building on the left, and the library is to your right after you enter.

By Bus
San Francisco Municipal Bus lines 9, 33 and 48 run near the hospital. Bus routes and schedules

Monday - Thursday, 8 am - 6 pm
Friday, 8 pm - 5 pm

The library is closed on state and federal holidays. Reference librarians are available to assist you during business hours.

  • Members of the public
All are welcome to use the library and its resources, both print and electronic materials. Seven public access computers are available free of charge for the public to use to research health topics; however, members of the public are asked to limit their computer time to one hour per day.

SFGH and UCSF patrons are asked to use the computers in the library’s computer lab. Library staff can help you locate specific information and explain how to use the resources.

Reference librarians are usually available to assist you during regular business hours.

Library staff is always available to help you with your information needs and may be able to save you some valuable time. Although all staff members are trained to handle basic requests, it's best to speak to a reference librarian if you need in-depth research help or have a complicated medical question. What's available in the library?[BACK TO TOP]
  • Books - A core collection of reference books in medical, nursing, and allied health speciality areas. Also, circulating books such as exam preparation books (e.g., NCLEX, specialty boards) and books on consumer health and cultural diversity may be checked out for a two-week period by SFGH and UCSF staff, students and faculty. To find books and other SFGH Library materials search the UCSF GALEN catalog.

  • Journals - For a list of print journals available in the library, please see the SFGH Library Journal List Some print journals go back as far as 1981. Although many journal subscriptions have been cancelled because of online availablity, we are still receiving approximately 75 titles in paper format.

  • Computers - Provide access to not only the electronic resources purchased by the SFGH library, but also to the electronic books, journals, and databases licensed by the UCSF library. They also allow you to search the holdings of other University of California libraries and connect to the Internet. Detailed computer information and Computer use policy

  • Conference rooms - The library schedules several conference rooms for use by SFGH affiliated groups. For room descriptions and reservation policies and procedures see Conference room facilities

  • Photocopying and Printing - The library has one Xerox machine and provides printing from most library computers. See Photocopying and Printing rates

The computers in the Library provide access to not only the electronic resources purchased by the SFGH library, but also to the electronic books, journals, and databases licensed by the UCSF library.

There are restrooms for public use near the library entrance. Please ask for the key at the Circulation Desk.



Finding and Borrowing Library Materials

How do I find books?[BACK TO TOP]
To find books videos and other library materials located in the SFGH Library search the UCSF GALEN catalog Some reference and textbooks books are also available online. For detailed search tips see: Help using the UCSF catalog.
  • Look for SFGH books under LOCATION.
  • If you see “Click on the following to access the electronic resource” the book will be available electronically in the library, from any computer on the UCSF network, or via UCSF Remote Access VPN.
  • Collections of online books such as MD Consult, Access Medicine and STAT!Ref may be found by expanding the “Key Resources” menu on the UCSF Library Galen home page.

If you don't find what you are looking for in the catalog and you are a SFGH or UCSF staff, student or Faculty member you can request books through the SFGH interlibrary borrowing service

UCSF users with a UCSF Borrowing account can borrow books from the UCSF library or any other UC libraries and have them delivered to the SFGH Library. You can sign up for a UCSF borrowing account at the SFGH Library if you bring in your UCSF ID card.

To request book delivery:
  1. Find books in the MELVYL catalog
  2. Put a check in the box next to the book(s) you want order and click on Request button
  3. Enter your 14 digit library borrowing number beginning with 21378 on your UCSF campus-wide picture identification card.
  4. Be sure to select UCSF SFGH as your pick -up location
Books are usually delivered within 5-7 days and you will be notified when your items are ready to be picked up at the SFGH Library.
How do I find journals?[BACK TO TOP]


How do I get a copy of a specific journal article?[BACK TO TOP]

It’s sometimes easiest to find a specific journal article by searching a database like PubMed and finding out if it’s available full text to you online free of charge.The library offers classes on searching for articles and there are some online tutorials. You can always use our form Ask an SFGH Librarian if you need help finding articles.
  • UCSF Databases – A complete list of databases, searchable by title, keyword and subject. These databases are accessible on all UCSF-networked computers, including those in the SFGH library, as well as remotely via UCSF Remote Access VPN. Databases are the best way of finding journal articles on specific topics or those written by particular individuals.

  • SFGH Databases –The Barnett Briggs library subsidizes access to several EBSCOhost research databases including CINAHL Plus with full text and Medline Plus with full text. These databases are accessible on SFGH/DPH networked computers as well as UCSF networked compters located at SFGH including those in the Library.

Can I borrow library materials?[BACK TO TOP]

SFGH and UCSF staff, students and faculty may check out books, videos and other circulating library material for a two-week period and may request renewals by calling 206-3114. To find library materials available for check out at the SFGH Library, search the UCSF GALEN catalog.
Will the library borrow materials from other libraries for me?[BACK TO TOP]

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services are available to UCSF/SFGH faculty, staff and students on the SFGH campus for journal articles and books not available in the Barnett-Briggs Medical Library's collection or via online subscriptions. What is Loansome Doc?[BACK TO TOP]

If you are a SFGH employee you can sign up for a LoansomeDoc account which will enable you to send interlibrary loan requests to the SFGH Library directly from your PubMed search. If you need more information or help registering for this service call 206-3113.

UCSF users do not need to use Loansome doc they can order directly from Pubmed using UC-elinks. The SFGH library does not provide LoansomeDoc service to the public.


Can I request a book from the Parnassus library and pick it up at the SFGH library?[BACK TO TOP]

Yes, You can use the Book Delivery request form to borrow books from the UCSF library and have them delivered to the SFGH Library. You must have a UCSF borrowing account to use this service.

Computer Lab and Public Access Computers[BACK TO TOP]

Who can use the computers the Library?

Anyone can use the computers in the library. The five public access computers near the front of the library are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Members of the public are asked to register at the Circulation Desk and to limit their computer time to one hour per day.

All the other computers in the library including the clinical workstation , the scanning workstation and the workstations in and outside of the computer lab are reserved for use by SFGH and UCSF personnel. All users are asked to comply with the library Computer Use Policy.
Can I send email and look up topics on the internet?[BACK TO TOP]

Yes. The Library uses the Internet Explorer® and FireFox® web browsers. Double-click on the desktop icon to access the Internet and conduct web searches. You can also use web-based email accoucts, ( UCSF Outlook Web, yahoo, gmail, etc.) to send and receive email messages.
What else can I access on the library computers?[BACK TO TOP]

The computers in the Library provide access to not only the electronic resources purchased by the SFGH library, but also to the electronic books, journals, and databases licensed by the UCSF library. Microsoft Office 2003 Suite: Word, Excel, Powerpoint is installed on all library computers. See Computer Facilities for more information.
Can I access library resources from my home computer?[BACK TO TOP]

The SFGH Library website, publicly available databases (PubMed), and publicly available online journals are availble from your home computer.

SFGH Library licensed databases and online journals are only available on SFGH/DPH networked computers, UCSF networked compters located at SFGH, and computers in the Library. There is currently no remote access.

UCSF licensed databases and online journals are accessible on all UCSF-networked computers, in the SFGH library,and from your home computer using UCSF Remote Access VPN. VPN is only available to UCSF, staff students and faculty.
